Working Mechanism
- Contactors utilise an electromagnet to control a set of mechanical contacts.
- The electromagnet is activated by a low-voltage electrical signal from the control circuit.
- When the control circuit sends a signal to the electromagnet, the armature is attracted and the contacts close, allowing power to flow to the load.
- When the control circuit stops sending the signal, the armature is released and the contacts open, breaking the flow of power to the load.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when to replace a contactor?
Decrease in performance, such as frequent tripping, overheating or arcing are signs that you should replace your contactor.
Can Eaton XT IEC Series contactors be used with variable frequency drives (VFDs)?
Yes, Eaton contactors can be used with VFDs.
What is the difference between a relay and a contactor?
Relays control contacts of an electrical circuit due to a change of parameters or conditions in the same circuit or any other associated circuit. Contactors, on the other hand, are used to interrupt or establish connections in an electrical circuit repeatedly under different conditions.
What is the difference between AC and DC contactors?
DC contactor has a maximum operating frequency of 1200 times per hour, while AC contactors have a maximum operating frequency of 600 times per hour.
