Working Mechanism
- The joystick comes with a potentiometer which connects to the shaft.
- When the shaft is moved, the potentiometer produces a corresponding movement, varying the resistance and altering the electrical current in the circuit.
- The circuit is connected to contact terminals that send electrical signals to a processing unit.
- The processing unit then translates the analogue electrical signal into a digital electrical signal which is communicated to the piece of equipment.
Features
- They have a shaft mounted onto a base which connects them with the electrical circuit.
- These 2 or 4-position operator closes one circuit each in up / down and up / down / left and right positions, respectively.
- They are available in NEMA ratings 3, 3R, 4, 4X, 12 and 13 for protection against ingress of hazardous particulates.
Standards and Approvals
- UL
- CSA

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a pushbutton work?
A pushbutton switch completes an electrical circuit when pressed. When the circuit is connected, a small metal spring inside the push button makes contact with two wires, allowing the electricity to flow easily.
What does NEMA 13 stand for?
NEMA 13 enclosures are designed for indoor use and provide protection against dust, spraying of water, oil and non-corrosive coolants.
What is an illuminated pushbutton?
An illuminated pushbutton switch features a small LED, neon or incandescent lamp to emphasise the 'ON' position in electrical equipment.
