Frequently Asked Questions

What type of nails should be used with shingles?

It is recommended to use ring roofing nails made of hot-dipped galvanised steel (12-gauge or thicker). The length of the nail would be determined by the thickness of the sheathing and shingles.

Can you reuse roofing nails?

No, it is difficult to yank these nails out and their zinc coating might wear away. It is not advisable to reuse them as they may cause problems on the new roof due to wear / damage.

How to seal exposed nails?

Nails with visible nail heads are considered exposed. With the exception of the last cap shingle, the roof should have no exposed nails (and those nails should be covered in roofing cement). All new nails should be inserted in a manner such that the shingle above them covers the nails.
